We’ve got a pack Beagle!

I’ve mentioned in earlier posts that Beanie isn’t like her siblings. In fact, she isn’t really like any Beagles that we meet. Either in looks or in the way she moves. It had been suggested to us that Beanie was a throwback to a English pack Beagle, so we decided to research her pedigree and try and trace right back to her pack Beagle roots.

I’ve started to put together her pedigree in pictures and it was quite astonishing when you see it – she is NOTHING like any of her recent relatives. I’ve got quite a few pictures dating back a few generations and none resemble Beanie in any way.

In the picture above she appears to look like her dad (Redcap Renaissance), but when you look at a bigger picture of him you see that the build really is very different. Or is it….? He’s definately much chunkier, but if Beanie had her back legs back a bit like her dad then maybe the shape is the same? (There’s no chance of us getting Beanie to pose like her dad – the picture we’ve got took about half an hour. She only stays still for treats, but the minute you pull out a treat she parks her bum on the floor and refuses to stand :) ). But if she takes after her dad where on earth did she get her super slender frame from? I haven’t managed to get a photo of his dad, Raimax Cracker…does anyone know what he looks like?

She isn’t like her siblings either. This is a picture of her playing with her sister Bella a few weeks ago.

Most people think Beanie is tiny, but her looks are deceiving. She is in fact 16 inches at the shoulder, so the maximum height that a Beagle should be. Bella is perhaps a little over 16 inches but a whole 4 KG heavier! (Beanie’s currently 10.2 kg).

Now look how similar she is to these English pack Beagles. The similarity is quite astonishing! She sticks out like a sore thumb amongst a group of show/pet beagles, but she’d look as if she belonged to these packs!

We plan to keep researching her pedigree right back to the pack hounds, and perhaps try and arrange a visit to one or two of the hunting Beagle packs to see just how like these dogs Beanie really is.

But I guess this explains where our special little Beagle gets her physical prowess from!

It’s in the genes

We met up in the park today with a lady that used to breed Beagles many, many years ago. She’s always said that Beanie is very much like her first Beagle – and she was only one generation away from a working Beagle. She said that Beanie would look very much at home in a pack of English hunting Beagles. I came home and did a search for pictures of packs of English hunting Beagles and found this…..

Is that our little Beanie in the middle of the picture?

Is that our little Beanie in the middle of the picture????

Compare this to a recent piccy of Beanie standing in amongst of show Beagles….

I thought I’d see how far I could trace back Beanie’s pedigree. She’s such an outstanding little athlete….she must have got those genes from somewhere! Here’s what I’ve found so far.

I’ve traced back down through the bitches on Beanie’s mother’s side….

I think our breeder friend from the park is right about where Beanie gets her lean, lithe build from! Look at that little dog at the front of the Eton College Beagles picture. Beanie’s certainly got the refined looks and pretty face of the show Beagles, but her build definately seems to be a throw back to her Working Beagle roots!

Speed Swimmer

Beanie’s been having baths once or twice a week because of her skin allergies. She doesn’t really mind them, but sometimes she gets a bit fed up of getting wet. At last week’s swimming lesson she wasn’t keen on having her pre-swim shower so we took a little bit of cooked liver with us to make shower time more enjoyable. It worked a treat – she couldn’t get in there fast enough :)

Normally toys are used to tempt the dogs to do laps of the pool. This doesn’t work too well with Beanie as she’s never been toy oriented…unless of course she’s stealing another dog’s toy to ‘encourage’ it to race her. Today there was a rather noisy dog staying in the kennels next door to the pool and Beanie was more interested in a barking chorus with him than in swimming.

The vet suggested that we try using the liver treats in the pool. What a transformation!! Little Beanie was like a thing possessed. She was just a blur as she did lap after lap, desparately trying to catch that little piece of liver that stayed just ahead of her nose. Normally the vet has to keep hold of her little harness to stop her bolting for dry land. But while she had that little piece of liver in her hand our pup was mesmerised. The only drawback was that she was so focussed on the liver that when she finally got it she’d forget all about swimming and just sink…..with a mouthful of liver and an expression of utter joy on her face.
