More Biggles Pics

Sheriff’s Mum just sent us some more pics of Biggles! Apparently he’s the most adventurous pup in the litter, often letting his curiosity get him into trouble. That’s exactly what we want (gluttons for punishment!) – and it sounds just like Beanie – her breeder Liz described her as the escape artist of her litter.

We can’t wait to get him. Michelle is being fantastic and sending us regular updates. She says Biggles really stands out for her because he’s a real character. Which is exactly what we want! She also says she thinks he’s going to have his daddy’s pretty head (just like Beanie).

Beanie’s 100% back to ***her*** :) old self thanks! She’s just been out to Pets at Home to buy a little pressie to send to Biggles.

The jag was for a sore throat (the result of a cold) – nothing serious! Although we did of course panic and take her to the vet three times, phoned the vet nurse help line twice and phoned the vets a further three times!. But she’s our baby. :)

We’ll see you next week at the racing. The vet said she could get back to normal routine today, but based upon our own experiences with sport we know that shortly after having a cold it’s common to pull muscles when you do sprint-type exercise so we’re playing it safe. But we’ll see you next Sunday!

BTW – it’s Beanie’s sponsored run for Beagle Welfare next Saturday, so let everyone know that if they want to sponsor her they can do so online via PayPal. She’s raised over £100 so far!

Did I tell you that it was Liz Calikes that found Biggles for us? She’d met up with the mum’s owner (Marion Hunt) at a show and had told her that we were looking for a little boy of Sheriff’s. She mailed us to let us know and within hours he was ours!! So it’s all worked out nicely and it’s all down to fate . Beanie was born just a month before my mum died. Paul’s mum died on Tuesday night when Biggles was a month old. Both our mums knew about the dogs before they died which is really nice. They both loved dogs.

We’re drawn to the ones that have an ‘adventurous’ side to their nature too.Our first beagle Ciara was known to her breeder as the ‘holy terror’ as she kept escaping the whelping box but couldn’t get back in!! Ciara is our most intelligent which is why she was so curious to explore her world early on! Also we believe in fate as well with Ciara, she was born at the exact same time as we were burying Neil’s dad who had died suddenly,he was known as Iain Dubh so Ciara is also called Ciara Dubh after him,and Ciara is Irish for dark/black and ‘Dubh’ is Gaelic for dark/black so fate it was!! Ciara helped Neil get over his Dad’s sudden death by keeping him laughing with her funny wee beagle ways!

I’m not sure Beanie’s intelligent – Paul always says she only has one brain cell. But having said that she’s never had any trouble outwitting us, so I’m not sure what that says about our intelligence!! :)

I had a dig through my email archive and here’s what Liz had to say about Beanie when she was a few weeks old:

“She’s pretty but a fly little monkey who climbs out the box and lands on her nose every time. She is small (but perfectly formed as the saying goes). She is lively and mischievous without being a bully.”

That’s STILL a perfect description of out little Beanie. I’ve got a really good feeling that these two pups are going to get on like a house on fire. And with just 10 months between them it won’t be long before they’re best buddies. It’s going to be chaos!

Remember how we got the carpets ripped up and had lovely laminate floors put down a couple of weeks ago ? Well we’ve now ordered lots of horrible black rubber matting (like they use in weight training gyms) to cover our lovely floors and make a nice, safe play surface for out little hooligans. We must be mad! It’s really tough stuff so I don’t *think* they’ll chew it. And at least we can roll it up and hide it away if anyone’s still willing to visit us when we’ve got TWO crazy Beagles :)

I had a look at those carrying bags you told me about – do you think it will be big enough? He looks like a big boy to me!!!

I can’t see him being bigger than our Chino was, honestly he looks bigger in the pics than he will be in the flesh. I will lend you mine(rather than buying one cos you’ll only use it until his vaccinations kick in), it is a really good one with a strap inside that you can hook on to his collar so he doesn’t fall all over the place and a removeable washable pad for any little accidents. It’s great for taking them to vets for vaccinations and for taking them out for fresh air etc. and he can see out of this one even though you zip it shut at the top as mesh panels all round it.It’s slightly bigger than some of the ones you can buy.

Do you know if Biggles has been taken out on little car journeys in a crate as it makes all the difference to stop him being car sick if it’s done when they’re young (I do it with all my pups now.) It would make it easier for you driving him back home if that’s the case?

Good idea getting matting as laminate not good for a little puppy while he’s finding his feet!! It will be fine however once he’s bigger, they learn to adapt to laminate especially as it’s the textured one you have.

Well he’s already had a little trip from his mum’s house to his dad’s house! Michelle is looking after mum and the pups while Marion is on holiday (and thoroughly enjoying every minute of it from the sound of things :) ). And he’s going to have the drive back home to his mum’s in a week or two. I imagine the live a reasonable distance apart.

Is it safe for pups that haven’t had all their jags to mix with those that have? Beanie was fully innoculated when we got her so we didn’t have to deal with that. If so, then when he’s settled you’ll need to pop over with your little ones. We can have a late first birthday party for Beanie :)

Anyway, the matting hasn’t arrived yet but should be here in a day or two. It comes in those big 2ft by 2ft squares that lock together like a jigsaw puzzle. When Beanie was little she had the run of the upstairs landing while we were working in the office – we’ve got a baby gate at the top of the stairs and one at our office door. So we’ll get that completely covered with rubber matting and we’ve got a HUGE great dane sized cushion at one end of the landing (outside our office door) – big enough for ten pups! The stairs are carpeted, but we’re also going to put matting in the hall, kitchen & dining room. It’s a big square hall with double doors opening onto the open plan kitchen and dining room, and the dining room has double doors opening onto the decking and garden. So it’s a nice big open area for playing.

Thank you, that would be great Tisha and Chino would love to come to their first birthday party ever! Its fine to have Biggles around fully innoculated, healthy and wormed dogs in a place where you know there haven’t been any un-vaccinated dogs or ill animals like vet’s floors, outside, apart from, as you know in your own back garden.

I know you had said you get cats in your garden but I remember my vet saying he wouldn’t be concerned about cats passing anything onto puppies,I presume they don’t come in when Beanie’s out in garden as you wouldn’t want any fights!

Hope after today you can now move on from death and illness and look forward to new life in Biggles and in Beanie, she won’t lie about sleeping indoors as much cos she’ll have a little bro’ to play with!

Remember you two are Alpha male and female but Beanie is above Biggles in hierarchy so it is ok for her to tell him what to do to certan extent, tell him to calm down etc… however I know someone who gives both their dogs a chew and the older one steals it off the younger one and they don’t feel they should intervene so the younger dog never gets a chew totally unfair and wrong! It is essential that you do not allow this, as that older dog is going against the Alpha of the pack as if Neil or I give any of our dogs a chew it is not for any of the others to challenge that!

    Brilliant!

When we’ve got Biggles we’ll work out a date that suits us both for the Birthday Party!!!!

It sounds as if the puppies are doing great – out playing in the sunshine for most of yesterday!
