Bum-end No More?

Bum snuggles are dead easy to get in our house. For example, this morning in bed I had a big white bum in my armpit, and all I had to do to get this was open Biggles’ crate, wait for him to trot over to my side of the bed, and lift the covers a bit. Pretty much anytime I feel like a nap on the sofa and leave a bit of space for a Beagle, it’ll be the bum end that’ll be closest to my head. Now don’t get me wrong – given the choice between a bum-end Beagle snuggle and no snuggle at all, I’ll take the bum end – but it does have its drawbacks:

  • Beagle farts are more keenly experienced when delivered close to one’s nose
  • During a stretch there’s a higher risk of getting a foot in your mouth
  • A tail going up your nose can be quite tickly

Head-end snuggles avoid most of these problems, but historically they’ve been very difficult to come-by. This last week however, Susan has been consistently achieving head-end cuddles with the Bigglet, and I’m jealous.

The head-end cuddle: truly the holy grail of Beagle snuggling

She’s given me the opportunity to “borrow” a cuddle she’s set up a few times, but mostly our attempts to switch places without disturbing his lordship have failed; Biggles comes out of his snooze, does a 180 and I get left with the bum again. On one occasion it went smoothly, but Beanie saw what was happening, became jealous herself, and we ended up having a three-way tug game with Biggles’ blanket.

Beanie may be the most cuddle-averse Beagle in the history of Beagles, but when Biggles is getting something she isn’t, then there’s going to be trouble!

Perhaps if we can make her jealous enough, even Beanie may succumb to the head-end snuggle eventually. For now though we’ll just have to be satisfied with stealth hugs when she’s licking spilled food off our clothes, or is otherwise occupied with her suspicious chicken toy.

Teehee I like this post. I have two beagles, well the one named Bagel just passed away, but my other beagle Snoopy likes to sleep downstairs at night and then in the morning after he is fed breakfast he likes to come upstairs and sleep at the foot of my bed. I agree with you on the three points you made though, beagle farts can be deadly.

Josie is quite cuddle-averse as well. Probably a good thing, since HRH is 15 and completely incontinent now … it would be sad to tell her she’s no longer allowed in the bed with us, but good news is that she was never interested in the people bed. Lady is the queen of bum-end snuggling here in Delaware. In addition to the items you noted in your list, it’s also likely you’ll get pointy beagle toes stuck into your ribs in the middle of the night if she feels she needs to move somewhere else for her own comfort.

Ah yes the pointy toes. First thing on a morning, before the heating goes on, Biggles likes to get in really close for warmth, and even Beanie gets close enough for a little radiated heat. But once they’ve warmed up out come the nails and the stiff, pushing legs. It’s like “You humies really should get up now, because we need more space”

Bedtime cuddles are the thing I miss more than anything since we lost JB. Cassie doesn’t like to sleep with us but he used to come to bed with me and snuggle up (Michael’s a night owl and doesn’t go to bed until the early hours, well past beagle bedtime!)

@ Paul, Lady is a lot more direct in her intent to wake us in the morning. At least 10 minutes before the alarm sounds, she is sitting up next to me in the bed, with high pitched whining and moaning, very clearly saying, “I’m hungry and bored. You must get up and provide breakfast and walkies.” And we get no break on the week-end, either. Rarely do the beagles allow us to sleep in!

@Julie: From what I’ve heard the boys seem to be more into cuddles than some of the girls. I hope your next beaglet is a proper snuggle-bum.

@Susan: We have to be quite prompt in opening the crates so that snuggling can begin (wailing and banging otherwise), but once in our bed I think B&B would quite happily sleep in until lunchtime!

Yes! Bode was a snuggle-bum of the highest order. It was a toss-up, really, on whether head or bum was preferable, as his mouth was reminiscent of a city sewer on a hot summer day. My previous beagle (female) was a heads-up kind of snuggler, though.

Barney is a cuddle bum. However since Princess Jodi arrived, he is not allowed on the bed. EVER. Her Highness prefers to be under a pile of covers, coming out only to wake me in the early hours. She is also the Town Crier and lets me know if one of the boys needs to go out. What a gal…

Sounds like Jodi and Beanie have some similar traits, except that the Beanster is prepared to negotiate with Biggles over access to sofas, our bed, and the special Beagle “day bed” that Susan made. The negotiation process is however quite noisy, and usually occurs during a phone call or TV program that we actually want to listen to :)
